“Sir, tell them we are rising.” This was the response Richard Wright Sr. had when asked what message the retired Union General, Oliver Otis Howard, should take back to the North. Born into slavery in 1855, Mr. Wright lived a life full of leadership and achievement. He founded a high school, a college, and a bank; he was a veteran and leader in the Civil Rights Movement, and established the National Freedom Day Association, which is how February 1st became known as National Freedom Day.
Black History Month, and National Freedom Day help this nation recognize and remember the legacy of Black people. But do not let the shortest month of the year limit your learning of our history. Always remember the 1st of February. We are rising!
