The Summer of 1963

During Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I have a Dream" speech, he boldly shared this powerful, iconic, and still relevant statement in front of thousands of people the summer of 1963, almost 56 years ago:

"…But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. And so, we’ve come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice."

On this day, I remain hopeful. Despite ongoing concerns of Denver's homelessness, of Colorado's continued use of the death penalty, of our nation's mass incarceration of minorities and immigrants, and so many more issues, I remain hopeful. We the people, must continue to fight for justice and fair treatment for those less fortunate. Dr. King has left an everlasting legacy in the hearts and minds of all races, orientations, and spiritual beliefs that indeed, collectively, we are the riches of this nation; and together we not only hold the check of opportunity but we are the bank.
